Talk Android Apps of the Week: November 28, 2015

It’s Sunday, the time of the week when Talk Android brings you a report on some of the very best applications we’ve been using over the course of the past seven days. Today we’re focusing our attention on a great photo editing tool, a must-have on-demand Internet media streaming service, a fantastic wallpaper collection and an ultra-reliable soccer companion.

Layout from Instagram: Collage

Whether you’re a frequent or periodic Instagrammer, I’m pretty sure you’ve come across one or two of your friends uploaded collages highlighting a memorable occasion, like for instance a birthday celebration, a recent holiday or a catch-up with friends and family. But have you ever wondered how they create these images?

It’s odds-on they use an application called Layout from Instagram: Collage. This app allows users to remix up to 9 photos at a time and arrange them in a personalized grid, and as an official service developed in-house by the Facebook-owned company, it comes bundled with direct support for Faces, thereby giving you the ability to tag selected people.

Netflix

Netflix-HD

Netflix is one of my most favoured applications. When I’m on a long journey and I’ve finished all my work, I instantly plug my headphones into my smartphone, open up the app and queue an episode of Breaking Bad. Having the facility to watch thousands of TV shows and movies right from my handset is truly awesome as it banishes boredom from many monotonous situations.

The application is extremely well built and rarely crashes. Movies are loaded in quarters, so it won’t start playing until the first 30-minutes or so have been downloaded, which eliminates any buffering frustration you may otherwise have incurred. This is also great if you pass through an area with no signal, as it means you can continue watching the show until it regains the connection.

Backgrounds HD (Wallpapers)

Backgrounds-HD

In my line of work, I sometimes find myself bored of the stock wallpapers that ship as standard on devices, but strangely when I look for alternatives online, they never seem to fit well and, more often than not, scream low quality. That’s when I decided to see if I could find an app containing a database of images from which I could select one to be configured as my home or lock screen.

After scrolling through many of the Play Store’s offerings, I stumbled upon Backgrounds HD. This application provides users with instant access to more than 8,000 images, which can be set as your wallpaper without having to leave the app. All of the images are neatly arranged into categories, which, coupled with the search functionality, makes it incredibly easy to find what you’re looking for.

LiveScore

Live-Score

If you’re a huge soccer fan, then the last application we’re looking at this week was made just for you. LiveScore provides users with second-by-second score updates from leagues, cup competitions and championships worldwide. For each game, detailed match information will be provided  — so you can easily see who scored the last goal without having to leave the app.

If you’re in any way concerned that LiveScore will eat up lots of data because it gathers information in real-time, then don’t be. The service actually uses a complex data compression algorithm to deliver bandwidth friendly, minimal transfer times, which means that using this tool will hardly touch your monthly data pool.
