Huawei exec lets slip confirmation of new Nexus device this year

By | 3rd June 2016

Huawei killed it with last year’s Nexus 6P. The Huawei Nexus 6P was a big hit with fans of the Nexus series, offering great specs and a premium body for a fairly low price. And it seems we may see another this year.

There are rumors that HTC was chosen to make 2016′s Nexus device, or even multiple devices if the rumor holds true. HTC Nexus phones for three years sounds great, but Huawei confirmed that it will make a Nexus device this year. At the South African launch of the Huawei P9, Charlene Munilall, general manager for Huawei’s Consumer Business Group in SA, explained why Nexus devices weren’t popular in the region.

The Nexus product is a very niche product… the techies love it but there’s a very small number of people that buy it. Hence Cellucity only brought 300… into the country… The operators generally don’t take up the Nexus device. That said, the distributors, our open market, do bring in the device, that’s how Cellucity got it… and that will still be the same this year. We’re doing the Nexus again this year, by the way.

Of course, this may be a mistake, and so we’ll have to wait for an official announcement. But this is hope, because if Huawei makes a new Nexus device as good as the 6P, we’ll be happy.
