iPhone notifications don’t need to be annoying. You can customize most iPhone notifications so that you only get alerts when you want them, and you can even control the notification style and where you see them.
Taking control of your iPhone notifications is a great way to personalize your iPhone and it can turn an annoying interruption into alerts that you find useful.
How to Customize iPhone Notifications
You can turn notifications completely off, turn the sound off, remove the little red bubble on app icons, make a banner stay until you dismiss it, choose if notifications show in history or on the lock screen.
We love customizing the notifications for apps that we don’t want to interrupt us, or that we don’t want making noise or showing up on the lock screen. We recommend customizing the notifications for individual apps instead of apps overall.
Go to Settings and then tap on Notifications.
You can choose if you want to Show Previews when the phone is locked, or if you want them hidden until you use Touch ID or Face ID.
From there you can scroll down and customize iPhone notifications for each app on your iPhone, even the default iPhone apps. Tap on an app name. Your iPhone notification customization options include;
Allow Notifications – Turn all app notifications on or off.
Sounds – Turn all notification sounds on or off for this app.
Show On Lock Screen – Show notifications for this app on the lock screen.
Show in History – Show in the Notification Center when you scroll through older notifications.
Show as Banners – See a pop down banner from the top of the phone when you get a notification.
- Temporary – Banner appears then goes away.
- Persistent – Banner stays until you dismiss it.
Show Previews – When to see the content of the notification
- Always – see the notification content all the time.
- When Unlocked – only show the content when you’ve unlocked the phone with Passcode, Face ID or Touch ID.
- Never – Never show the content, just a message telling you what app has a notification.
You can configure these for each app, so that you have a specific set of notifications or your important apps and a different set for those that aren’t as important.
We’ve discovered that enjoying our iPhone and getting the most out of our apps is best when we change the notifications so that each app only interrupts us when and how we want it to.
