Google Pixel yearly sales double to 3.9 million in 2017

The Google Pixel phones have been very well received since they first appeared in 2016. Despite critical praise, though, these phones haven’t sold like those from companies such as Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi, who dominate the market.

However, IDC’s latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report (via @fjeronimo) suggests that sales of Google Pixel devices doubled in 2017, reaching a total of 3.9 million units. This will surely be welcome news for Google as it continues to grow the Pixel brand.

Of course, there are a few things to take into consideration about the numbers. Firstly, 3.9 million units is a small part of the overall Android market. In comparison, between their release in April 2017 and August of the same year, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 plus sold 20 million units—and those were just two of the many phones released by Samsung that year.

Further, the original Pixel and Pixel XL were released in October 2016, meaning they were only available for a portion of that year whereas they were available for the whole of 2017. The Pixel 2 phones were also launched in October 2017, with a bigger marketing push, and their shipments are included in the 3.9 million total.

In other words, doubling sales during a 12-month period, from a three-month period, with second generation products added on top might not be that surprising.

All of this being said, it’s still a positive result for Google and there’s plenty room for growth given that the Pixel 2 is only sold from the Google Store in a few countries. If Google continues to make great phones and increase its sales in this fashion, it won’t be long before it is sitting with a much larger part of the global smartphone market.
