BlackBerry is suing Facebook over patent infringement

By | 6th March 2018

BlackBerry has taken the legal route in a longstanding conversation with Facebook, with the focus being on messaging.

According to a report from Reuters, BlackBerry has filed a lawsuit against Facebook, which also encompasses the messaging app WhatsApp and the social network Instagram, in a federal court based out of Los Angeles, California. The lawsuit itself calls out Facebook and its popular apps for their use of messaging in each platform.

BlackBerry has apparently engaged in a conversation with Facebook for several years now on this particular subject, but there wasn’t a resolution being made in that method. As a result, the company is moving forward with the lawsuit. BlackBerry’s spokesperson, Sarah McKinney, said “We have a strong claim that Facebook has infringed on our intellectual property, and after several years of dialogue, we also have an obligation to our shareholders to pursue appropriate legal remedies.”

The specific details of the lawsuit aren’t known right now, but the likely bet here is that BlackBerry is suing Facebook with regards to the patents that it owns tied to BlackBerry Messenger.

Did you ever use BlackBerry Messenger bak in the day? What’s your go-to messaging app these days?
