Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant invading more phones, PCs, speakers, security systems, kitchen appliances, cars, and more every day, you’d be forgiven for thinking that smart-tech companies might be running out of places to embed digital assistants around the home. With
One firm that hasn’t run out of new ideas for the smart home is ecobee, which has now introduced a smart light switch. The appropriately dubbed Switch Plus is the first light switch to hit the market that comes with built-in Amazon Alexa support.
Thanks to Alexa’s voice recognition smarts, as well as far-field microphones, the Smart Plus can be used to control your smart lighting set-up with a few simple spoken commands.
You can even ask the Switch Plus to playback music, read out the day’s news headlines, and much more, just like any other Alexa-enabled device.
While the Switch Plus doesn’t support dimming controls, it does feature motion sensors which automatically turn lights off when you leave a room and a timer for setting custom lighting schedules – you can also change these settings via the ecobee app. A future update due in the summer will add support for controlling ecobee’s range of smart thermostats.
As with many other ecobee products, the Switch Plus also works with Google Assistant and Siri via Apple HomeKit support, as well as the SmartThings and IFTTT platforms.
The ridiculously high-tech light switch is set to go on sale on March 26th, with pre-orders now open in the US and Canada where it costs $99 and $119 (CAD), respectively. You can pre-order the Switch Plus via the button below.
