Are you one of Facebook’s 87 Million Cambridge Analytica Victims?
Today is a big day for Facebook and its users as the company will begin notifying 87 Million people if they were targeted in the Cambridge Analytica incident.
Beginning today, when you log into the Facebook app, you may see a section similar to the above on your news feed. In addition to suggesting you update 3rd party app connectivity, Facebook will disclose if you were affected by Cambridge Analytica’s improper sharing of information of your data. We’re not sure if this notification will roll out over hours, days, or weeks- but keep on the lookout.
Facebook has come under incredible scrutiny for their role in helping political interest groups target Facebook users with propaganda-filled messages and what we’ve come to know as #FakeNews. It’s an odd place for Facebook to be since their ability to allow advertisers to deeply target very precise groups based on personalized criteria make it one of the most powerful advertising platforms the world has ever seen. Legalities aside, many people are reconsidering how or if they’ll continue using Facebook including Elon Musk who abruptly deleted Facebook accounts for both Tesla and SpaceX.
Here’s what you should do next:
- Keep your fingers crossed.
- Log into Facebook if you dare.
- Update your 3rd party app access with great scrutiny
- Let us know in the comments if you were or weren’t affected and your thoughts regarding the bigger pictures of Facebook, privacy, and politically driven advertising via social media
I’ve used the “Login with Facebook” option as a convenient alternative to creating accounts more often than I’d like to admit, so I’m curious to see the results and will be sure to share any interesting findings in the comments as well.
