The Walking Dead: Our World is an augmented reality game like Pokémon Go, but instead of hunting Pokémon, you;’re fighting hordes of zombies in the real world. You’ll fight zombies in the street, in your office or even your bedroom. Wherever you open the app you will see zombies that you need to take out to protect the world around you.
You’ll need to complete different objectives and challenges to unlock better gear, earn points and most importantly kill walkers. This is what you need to know about The Walking Dead: Our World app that is coming to iPhone and Android.
The Walking Dead: Our World Release Date
There is no specific The Walking Dead: Our World release date on the books, but this is a game that we expect will arrive this summer.
Originally announced in August 2017, the game is still in development and “coming soon” to iPhone and Android. You can pre-register on Android and sign up for email notifications for iPhone.
This game is going to see a huge push for playing outside given the AR style, so we expect a summer release. The Walking Dead season 8 wrapped up in April, and The Walking Dead season 9 starts this fall, but it makes sense for a The Walking Dead: Our World release date when it’s summer in the U.S.
The game is already out in The Philippines and Australia, as a soft launch. With this early release the developer can test the game before the full release.
What is The Walking Dead: Our World?
The Walking Dead: Our World is an augmented reality game. It puts virtual objects in the real world around you. In this case you will see Walkers and weapon drops all around you and you will need to battle them.
You’ll look at them on your phone and physically move around the real world, while moving your phone around to see more zombies. You do not need to wear a headset and you will be able to play with most phones.
Will The Walking Dead: Our World Work on My Phone?
The Walking Dead AR game uses ARKit on iPhone and AR Core on Android. This means you should be able to play on the iPhone 6s and newer devices. ARCore requires Android 7.0 or higher, and some devices need to run Android 8.0 or higher. You can check Android compatibility here.
How to Play The Walking Dead: Our World
When you start up The Walking Dead: Our World, you will need to scan the ground for footprints. This will lead you to discover The Walking Dead characters, it also serves to tell your phone about the area you will be playing in without taking you out of the game.
You’ll need to travel to select locations to take on specific missions, so this is a game meant to be played in public. Once you find a character, you will see zombies on your phone screen, overlaid on the real world.
Tap on the screen to use your weapons and kill Walkers. You can also move to get away if they are getting too close. You can take damage from bites and attacks, so you need to be aware of your surroundings and Walkers trying to sneak up on you.
You can use a variety of weapons that you will find throughout the world, which will help you clear out Walkers. When you beat challenges you will get rewards that you can use to level up your character and you can also bring in AR help from show characters. Based on the trailers, it looks like you will be able to play with friends and other nearby players, but we haven’t found confirmation of this yet.
The game includes built-in sharing tools so you can take photos of the characters you unlock and even bring in a friend to pose with the character.
Will it Be Free to Play?
There is a very good chance that The Walking Dead: Our World will be free to play on iPhone and Android. Most of the time games like this are free, and then the developers make money through in app purchases that level you up faster or unlock new gear.
