Samsung Galaxy Watch (likely Gear S4) name confirmed, coming with Bixby support
Samsung’s line of Gear smartwatches has long been rumored to be incorporated under the Samsung Galaxy name. We’ve seen known Chinese leaker Ice Universe state that the upcoming Samsung Gear S4 will actually be branded the Samsung Galaxy Watch, and a new report from SamMobile corroborates those findings. The logo for the Samsung Galaxy Watch has been registered in South Korea, and also it’s likely going to support Samsung’s virtual assistant, Bixby. Interestingly, SamMobile disagrees with the report from Ice Universe which suggests that the Samsung Galaxy Watch will run Wear OS.
This suggests that the South Korean technology giant is bringing its wearables closer to its flagships. It may increase sales, especially as smartwatches are already on the up. All the paperwork has been filed as well to register the name along with a “Samsung Galaxy Fit” line of devices in the United States. As for the potential of it running Wear OS, SamMobile disagrees and believes that it will continue to run Tizen OS. Samsung Bixby support makes sense if the device does indeed run Tizen because the Google Assistant is built into Wear OS.
Other potential changes include a new device redesign, a larger battery, and the possible ability to measure the owner’s blood pressure. Regarding when the device is going to be launched, we don’t have any information on that. In theory, it could launch alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 in August especially since we know that Bixby 2.0 will be launching then too. It would be the perfect time to launch a new wearable with Bixby support. If it’s not released then, we could see it at IFA 2018 in Berlin. Either way, we can expect the Samsung Galaxy Watch/Samsung Gear S4 to be the best smartwatch released by Samsung yet.
