Digital Wellbeing Flip to Do Not Disturb Google Pixel 2

The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL were officially announced last week. While some may argue they’re not worthy of an upgrade from previous Pixel devices because of not-so-much changed hardware, we know that Google really did software right. As you may already know, Google filled them with a bunch of exclusive features. One of them is “Flip to Shhh,” which lets you put the Pixel into Do Not Disturb mode when you place it face down on a table or any other surface. Lucky for us, almost nothing stays exclusive to a specific device for long. If the feature is good, the development community ports it to other Android devices.

One of the things that is quintessential Android is the ability to automate literally everything on our devices. Tasker is by far the most powerful and popular application for making your phone work as you want at any time. This is what we’ll use in this article to replicate the “Flip the Shhh” feature on virtually any Android device. To be honest, I had this feature back in the Marshmallow days, before it was cool.

Before I get into explaining how to set it up, I’ll first explain what the task requires. First of all, the application requires Notification Access. This is to put the phone in Do Not Disturb mode when you flip it over. The second permission it requires is Device Admin, which will let the task turn off the display/put the phone to sleep when you put it on a surface. You don’t want to leave it upside down with a bright display, do you? Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get into the tutorial itself.

The current owner of Tasker, João Dias made the task himself, so you don’t have to set it up manually. The process couldn’t be more simple.

  1. Open this link on your Android device with Tasker installed.
  2. Tap on “Import.”
  3. Allow the two permissions explained above.
  4. That’s it!

The phone will even make a sound every time you flip it around to let you know that it activated Do Not Disturb mode. Here is the video of the following process.

Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL still have some tricks up their sleeves, like Night Sight and other camera improvements. We’ll try to bring them to your devices as soon as possible. I’m sure developers on XDA Forums will also offer full custom ROMs for the first and second generation of Pixel devices with features from the Pixel 3/XL. You can download tasker from the Play Store listing below.
