[Discussion] What is your favorite smartphone announced in October?

By | 3rd November 2018

We’re already well into the last quarter of 2018, and the cool fall weather reminds us that we’re not too far away from 2019 now. But while it’s not quite done yet, it’s safe to say 2018 has been a pretty exciting year for the smartphone scene. Lots of cool technology, including different kinds of multi-sensor camera setups, in-screen fingerprint scanners, and moving cameras/sensors, was not only publicly showcased, but actually made its way to widely sold consumer devices. Most things we’re seeing today would have been unthinkable 4 or 3 years ago. But that’s the thing about technology: it improves, evolves, matures, and gets insanely better in very short periods of time.

October, in particular, was a pretty interesting month. Xiaomi, Huawei/Honor, Lenovo, and Nubia all tried to eliminate the “notch problem” in their own way: While the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and the Honor Magic 2 feature slider screens that revealed/hidden the front-facing camera and sensors on demand, the Nubia X got rid of the front-facing camera entirely, instead putting a secondary display on the back of the phone to have users flip the phone over to take selfies. But it’s not the only thing we saw this month. From quad rear camera setups to teardrop notches to in-display fingerprint scanners, this month was jam-packed with a lot of innovation. Here are the devices that were announced, in order, and our articles covering the launch:

Although the Lenovo Z5 Pro launched on the morning of November 1st, we’ll also include it in this discussion. We’ll be excluding devices that only launched in China, however.

While there are very few new concepts here, it is good to see new smartphones adopt newer technology, and gives us more hope for 2019 smartphones, which should look better than ever if leaks and rumors tell us something. What’s your favorite smartphone announced in October? Which do you think is the most exciting? From the Pixel 3 to the Razer Phone 2 to the OnePlus 6T to the Huawei Mate 20 Pro to the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, there are lots of new, good-looking offerings here worth considering. But we want to hear it from you, so let us know in the comment section below.
